ALTE MU Impuls - Werk

The ALTE MU Impuls – Werk is a cross-innovative creative center, a lighthouse project in Schleswig-Holstein, a prototype for a sustainable future and a space for collaborative work and life.

First, there was a free space. In 2013 the Muthesius Art Academy moved house and in the city center appeared a space with out function, purpose or specific use. This charged place, once named after Herrmann Muthesius, co-founder of the “Deutsche Werkbund”, and constructed in line with the Ulmer Schule, attracted momentum. The free space was quickly occupied by free thinkers, groups, initiatives and associations. Together they fill up a vacuum not only on the concrete place, but in the whole city Kiel: A space for future-shaping, for collaboration, for art and culture and for a supportive grass-root community, together we are the ALTE MU Impuls-Werk e.V.

This unplanned gathering of change makers in the former Muthesius Art Academy has by now grown into a lighthouse project in the middle of the regional capital Kiel.

In future we want to provide an umbrella for housing, work, culture, art, education and research in Kiel. Our shared values are solidarity, sustainability, diversity, candor and the belief in a different future.

Together we are strong. Through a sustainable mix of non-profits, start up’s and established, the projects in the ALTE MU guarantee in our solidarity rent model that different rents can be payed by different types of income. The ALTE MU is bottom-up. The biweekly plenum represents the highest decision-making authority. In this open meeting we discuss collective events, rents, new projects and community and take decisions together. Grassroots democracy is lived.
